Six Steps to a Successful Creative: Part III

3. Creative is problem-solving executed by the imagination using memory, experience, and taste.

Novelist James Joyce once wrote, “Memory is Imagination; Imagination is Memory”.

When confronted with a problem, your imagination generates solutions from the contents of your memory. If I ask you, “Who is the first president of the USA?” instantly your mind gives you, “George Washington.” And you may even see in your head an image of him on a dollar bill or crossing on the Potomac.

When confronted with a problem (like how to communicate a difficult concept in an engaging way), a Creative’s imagination draws upon the treasure chest of storylines, imagery, and previously successful work they’ve consumed and uses his or her taste to evaluate. Then “magically” inspiration strikes. It’s analogous to what an entrepreneur does in the marketplace.

Does your Creative focus on solving problems?
